Fish in the Pond

Water gardening and ornamental fish have been a integral part of landscaped gardens for many centuries. Ornamental fish such as Japanese Koi became a hobby back in the mid 1800’s when farmers raising carp for a food source started keeping some of the colorful carp as pets. It wasn’t until the mid 1900,s that the popularity of  Koi keeping started to grow after safe ways of transporting the Koi were developed.  Koi are now around the world.  Japanese Koi often referred to as Nishikigoi are colorful carp, the Japanese refer to them as living jewels. Koi are friendly and gentle, displaying a beautiful variety of colors and patterns including red, white, blue, yellow, black, gold, silver, etc., no two Koi are alike, each one is unique. This gives each Koi its own special character and is one of the reasons Koi are so popular among all ages. Schools of Japanese Koi will form a living kaleidoscope of colors swimming across the pond often mesmerizing viewers. The high grade Japanese Koi with there dynamic beauty have a majestic and graceful appearance when swimming in the pond, watching them gives you the sense of serenity and tranquillity. With today’s busy schedule and fast pace the Koi pond, with the graceful Koi swimming and the sound of water trickling over a waterfall can create a peaceful retreat in your own back yard.

Japanese Koi may be kept in various sizes of ponds. Thanks to technology and modern day filtration systems enjoying a pristine clear pond has become obtainable and affordable for the hobbyist.

Koi come in a large variety of colors, sizes, and quality. The Koi imported from Japan are considered to be of the highest quality in colors and body definition. The price of Koi is determined by the quality, bloodline, and size. The first time new customers see our selection of Koi they say “ I wish we came here first”.

Once you start collecting Koi, they soon become pets and enjoy being hand fed. Koi have different personalities, some will only come up to eat when the owner feeds them and will not eat from a strangers hand.

Caring for the Koi is easy, the most important is providing them with a healthy environment and good water quality, the most common reason for health problems is poor water quality or introducing plants and new Koi to the pond that may be diseased or a carrier of parasites.

Your pond is not a unlimited resource, take your time and build your collection of Koi over a period of time, introducing to many new fish can offset the balance of your pond. When adding water to your pond you must use a chloramine remover to treat the water.

It is advisable that you consult us when constructing a Koi Pond. Most of the contractors building ponds have never owned a pond prior to attending a seminar explaining how they can make thousands of dollars building ponds, now they’re “experts”.
